PLA Filament
PLA Filament for Everyday 3D Printing
PLA (Polylactic Acid) is the most widely used material in desktop FDM 3D printing and is the recommended starting point for most applications. It prints at lower temperatures than engineering materials, produces minimal odour during printing, adheres reliably to a heated build plate, and is available in a wider range of colours and finishes than any other filament type. All Bambu Lab PLA filaments are supplied on 1kg, 1.75mm spools and include RFID chips for automatic profile loading on Bambu Lab printers.
PLA Variants in the Bambu Lab Range
PLA Basic is the standard everyday material suited to prototypes, hobby models, functional parts, and general printing where surface aesthetics are secondary to reliability and print speed. PLA Matte produces a non-reflective, low-sheen finish that is popular for cosplay props, display models, and any print where a chalky or flat surface appearance is preferred over the slightly glossy finish of PLA Basic. PLA Silk and Silk+ produce a high-sheen metallic or satin effect without any metallic particles in the filament, making them easy to print while achieving a visually striking result.
Specialty PLA variants extend the range further. PLA Metal adds fine metallic particles for a genuinely weighted, metallic feel and appearance. PLA Marble, Wood, and Sparkle add visual textures through embedded particles. PLA Glow in the Dark emits visible light after UV exposure. PLA Tough+ offers increased layer adhesion and impact resistance compared to standard PLA. PLA-CF (carbon-fibre composite) provides significantly higher stiffness and is suited to structural parts and functional components where standard PLA would flex or break. See the PLA Special Effects range for the full selection of specialty finishes, or browse all Bambu Lab filaments for other material types.
What temperature does PLA print at?
PLA typically prints at a nozzle temperature of 190°C to 220°C depending on the specific formulation, with a heated bed temperature of around 35°C to 60°C. Bambu Lab PLA filaments load optimised temperature and speed profiles automatically on Bambu Lab printers via RFID. For third-party printers, start with the manufacturer's recommended settings for PLA and adjust based on print results.
Can PLA be used for outdoor or high-temperature applications?
Standard PLA has a heat deflection temperature of approximately 55°C to 60°C, which means it softens in direct sunlight, hot car interiors, and near heat sources. It is not suited to outdoor applications in warm climates or to any environment where prolonged heat exposure is likely. For applications requiring better temperature resistance, PETG (approximately 80°C) or engineering materials such as ABS or ASA are more appropriate choices.
How many colours are available in Bambu Lab PLA?
Bambu Lab PLA Basic is available in a large and expanding colour palette covering neutrals, primaries, pastels, and earthy tones. Specialty variants including Silk+, Metal, Matte, and Marble are available in a more limited colour range specific to each finish type. The full current colour selection for each variant is shown in the individual product listings.
